Centre Updates
Media Release: 5 April 2017

Queensgate Shopping Centre Reopening — Additional Details.

Lower Hutt’s Queensgate Shopping Centre will reopen the rest of the Centre on Thursday 6th April with a long weekend of celebrations including entertainment, giveaways and retail offers.

This follows the completion of demolition of a portion of the carpark and its cinema complex.

64 stores have remained closed since the Kaikoura earthquake in November because of the adjacent demolition works. With a few exceptions, due to usual tenant movements and upgrade works, these retailers will reopen for trade on Thursday.

To mark the event The Warehouse, will reopen its Lower Hutt store with 4 days of exclusive deals on clothing, homewares, toys and more. Countdown’s internal Centre access will also reopen on Thursday.

Customers visiting the Centre will notice a few interim changes as the Centre is prepared for further refurbishment:

  • The building has been “shrink wrapped” to create protection from the elements and allow contractors to take their time in creating the best possible design aesthetic to the medium-term cladding of the building.
  • Ground level outdoor carparking will be in place of the demolition site, accessible from Bloomfield Terrace and Waterloo Road. From here customers will enter the Centre via the usual entrance just off Bloomfield Terrace.
  • The area of the carpark which has been closed alongside the closed stores will also reopen to create more parking for customers.
  • New fire egress points have been reinstated at the end of the Centre where the entry to the Level 1 carpark has been lost.

Customers will also notice some works in the Centre Court area, the Level 1 Carpark and the loading dock. These works are in relation to the new store which will be opening in late 2017 and are unrelated to the demolition.

Courtesy crew will be stationed throughout the Centre and the carpark to help orientate customers to the new carpark layout and entries.

Media Release: 15 March 2017

Balance of Queensgate Shopping Centre to re-open.

Lower Hutt’s Queensgate Shopping Centre will reopen the balance of the Centre on Thursday 6th April following the completion of demolition of a portion of the carpark and its cinema complex.

The Centre, which was closed for inspection following the Kaikoura earthquake in November and partially re-opened 11 days later, will be re-clad and a ground level carpark put in the place of the current demolition site. Visitors to the Centre will also notice some changes to egress points once the Centre reopens.

Queensgate’s management company, Stride Investment Management Limited, has previously announced it will re-build the cinema complex. Detail of this will be provided once planning and design work has been completed. In the meantime, this ground level parking and cladding will be a medium-term solution. “Shrink wrapping” the building to create protection from the elements will allow contractors to take their time in creating the best possible medium-term design aesthetic, with the intention being that the shrink wrap will still be in place at the time of reopening to allow this work to continue.

Retailers whose premises remained closed because of the adjacent demolition will be given a confirmed date to access their stores in the coming week. Centre management will hold an information evening for all retailers in late March to provide details of the reopening and to outline future developments at the Centre.

Media Release: 24 November 2016

  • Shopping Centre to partially reopen on Friday
  • Action to be taken on damaged carpark

Over 80 retailers at the Queensgate Shopping Centre will open their doors for business on Friday 25th November (tomorrow) after a comprehensive assessment of the property by engineering and construction consultants and Hutt City Council engineers. In addition to the store openings, over 590 carparks will also be available for shoppers. Farmers will be one of the major stores to reopen following on from Countdown’s opening last weekend.

Queensgate Shopping Centre comprises 13 separate buildings, including one building with the cinema and approximately 300 carparks. The Council has notified the owner, Diversified NZ Property Trust, that earthquake damage to the carpark and cinema building has made it dangerous, and that steps must be taken to remove that danger. Diversified is currently considering how to address this, and the building will remain closed.

In addition, an area around the affected carpark, including a part of the shopping centre, will remain cordoned off to the public and to businesses as a safety precaution.

Chief Executive of the Centre management company, Peter Alexander, said that the company’s response is and always has been about ensuring the safety of the community.

“We have taken the time to ensure that the conclusions our expert engineers have reached have been thoroughly peer reviewed and re-evaluated and we are confident of the decision to re-open part of the Centre,” Mr Alexander said.

“It is too early to say what steps will be taken in relation to the carpark and cinema building, but we will keep customers and retailers updated as to progress and we expect to be able to report on this in the very near future.

“While this is taking place we look forward to welcoming shoppers back to Queensgate tomorrow.”
